The Grand Mother of Winter is known as The Callieach, the Irish Goddess of the fierce cold and bracing wind. Embodying the fallow time that ensures future fertility, this Goddess carries the wisdom of the ages. What insight does the Ancient Hag bestow in Her elemental nature as we begin a new turn on the Wheel of the Year?

After the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the solar year, the days will begin to grow longer toward the light half of the Wheel. We celebrate the return of the light. As the Yuletide approaches, we look within to find the light that we carry and see what needs rekindling. The year progresses.  With autumn on the horizon, the time of harvest approaches. There is work to be done before the season of fallow to come. This is the time to ask: how did the garden fare? What are we reaping? How can we make good use of this time and preserve what will be needed?  The old saying 'make hay while the sun shines' is a wise one, both practical and metaphoric. In our hearts and in our souls, what must we do to ensure a future we want to meet in time?
